Carla is an essential member of our Personal Injury team, and works on all aspects of personal injuries claims to ensure fair and equitable outcomes for claimants.
What are Carla’s areas of expertise?
Over the past 20 years of her legal career, Carla has predominantly practiced as a litigator in the area of personal injury claims for both plaintiffs and defendants. Carla has also general litigation and dispute resolution experience, including employment law and debt collection.
What have been the highlights of Carla’s legal career?
The highlight of her personal injuries work was a medical negligence case involving a young child who was left with cerebral palsy and other significant disabilities as a result of the mismanagement of the child’s birth. Working with Pat Hall, Director of Hede Byrne & Hall, along with experienced Counsel, Carla felt privileged to be a part of obtaining a fair outcome for the child’s family. The out-of-court resolution enabled the family to ensure the young child’s remaining years were as fulfilling as possible, and the child could be adequately cared for in the family home surrounded by loved ones. Carla’s recollection of the parents’ incredible strength during the immense period of adversity remains firmly fixed in her memory.
How has Carla maintained a work-life balance while working for HBH Lawyers?
Having been an integral part of the Hede Byrne & Hall team since 2000, Carla has witnessed the firm’s organisational growth and willingness to provide flexible work options to accommodate family responsibilities of various team members. A part of the firm’s early strategy was the move to an electronic file management system which enabled her to transition to working entirely from home while she started her young and busy family life. During this period, Carla was offered a compliance management position which enabled her to remain in touch with the firm’s people, practices and policies, while working entirely from home. Carla was able to maintain a work-life balance in this role for 5 years, working around her family commitments. In her own words,
“I am constantly amazed and thankful for how supportive the firm has been over the last decade or so in allowing me the flexibility to maintain a genuine connection to my profession whilst balancing my personal obligations. The firm’s forward-thinking approach to practice certainly paid off in 2020 when we were able to seamlessly transition to working remotely during COVID-19 restrictions.”
What about life outside the law?
Outside of the law and a busy family life, Carla also manages the administration of her husband’s construction trade business. Carla has also been involved in a number of community organisations including the Glennie Old Girls’ Association (where she held various Executive roles over the course of ten years), The Glennie School Foundation and the Mary MacKillop Catholic College P&F Association (where she held an Executive position from 2017 – 2019). Her other interests include music, reading and camping.
